The medieval form of tennis is termed as real tennis, a game that evolved over three centuries from an earlier ball game played around the 12th century in France that involved hitting a ball with a bare hand and later with a glove. Real tennis spread in popularity throughout royalty in Europe, reaching its peak in the 16th century.

1896

The First Tennis Club, the Leamington Tennis Club, opens.

1875

The rules of Lawn Tennis have become official, with slight modifications, ever since. Those rules were adopted by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club for the first Lawn Tennis Championship, at Wimbledon in 1877

1905

The Four Grand Slams, Wimbledon, The US Open, The French Open, and the Australian Open have officially opened. The ITF is also founded shortly after in 1913. The First Professional Tour Is established in 1926.

1968

The Open Era begins when Grand Slam tournaments agreed to allow professional players to compete with amateurs. Before 1968, only amateurs were allowed to compete in Grand Slam tournaments and other events organized or sanctioned by the ILTF, including the Davis Cup.
